After a Flood
Did you know that most homeowner's insurance policies don't cover flood damage? Flood insurance is issued through the National Flood Insurance Program.
Regardless of your insurance status, every homeowner should employ the following best practices within 24 hours of the flood water receding.
Inspect
Before entering any structure, you should inspect the property for visible structural damage. Do not enter unsound structures and contact your utility company if you suspect damage to lines.
Photograph
Don't remove any water or make repairs before you photograph the extent of the damage. Forgetting to do so could result in decreased coverage from your insurer.
File a Claim
Call your insurance company to determine the type of coverage you have. If covered, notify the insurer about the damage to your home and discuss how to file a claim.
Be sure to discuss any repairs you intend to complete and if you need to wait for an adjuster to inspect the property.
Prevent Future Damage
Remove water soaked contents as soon as possible. Mold can develop with 48 hours of a Flood. Always photograph any items you remove. Flood restoration services are available to assist with the clean-up
Secure all broken windows and doors. If there is roof damage, tarps will be necessary to prevent additional damage. Discuss temporary housing options with your insurer.
